UC-EDU-3 Enhanced Healthcare Education
Medical personnel, such as prehospital nurses, must be able to handle a wide range of medical emergencies. These emergencies can range from traffic accidents and sports injuries to various medical emergencies that may occur at home. Additionally, they must be able to provide care in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. This requires both advanced cognitive and clinical skills.
To develop these skills, practical training, often with patient simulators that present human anatomy and physiology, is an important part of the education. However, creating a realistic training environment poses a significant challenge. Currently, patient simulators are confined to a classroom setting, irrespective of the scenario being trained. This setup is markedly different from real-life accident scenes or the experience of treating a patient in a moving ambulance.
This is where our use case comes in. By leveraging beyond-5G (B5G) and 6G technologies, we move training out of the classroom and into realistic scenarios, such as in an ambulance or at a simulated accident scene. Today, patient simulators are controlled through a mirror wall, allowing observation of classroom activities. But by connecting the patient simulator over B5G/6G and via transmitted video, it can be remotely controlled and used outside the classroom to create more realistic training scenarios. The technology also enables students to participate in the scenarios remotely via audio and multiple video feeds.
With our solution, we bring training into real-world settings, facilitating a new level of learning that is more flexible, more authentic, and more economically sustainable. The technology tested in the use case is not limited to our specific scenario, but can be applied to other educational settings or to provide backend expert medical advice to prehospital nurses and other first responders.
