ZERO-FEST
ZERO-FEST
ZERO-FEST deploys 5G-enabled, AI-augmented smart recycling bins at rural/remote cultural festivals that generate large volumes of mixed waste in a few days, where connectivity is often poor and crowd density can overload Wi-Fi/LPWAN approaches. Building on Cyclefi’s existing smart recycling platform (IoT weigh-scale + embedded electronics + sensors + cloud dashboard), ZERO-FEST upgrades the system with 5G NR modules to keep telemetry reliable even in congested festival conditions.
Each bin includes a low-power camera and an on-device lightweight AI model that classifies waste locally to minimize compute and bandwidth. When confidence is low, the system can escalate to a higher-accuracy model on an edge server, depending on predicted network conditions. Operationally, the solution streams fill levels and classification results to a real-time dashboard (overflow/contamination monitoring, collection prioritization).
The ENVELOPE platform enables this via Device Location and Predictive QoS, validated on ENVELOPE’s Greek standalone 5G trial site.
This use case is replicable
High level of replicability : 61 < LR < 80
Good level of replicability: 31 < LR < 60
Low level of replicability: 00 < LR < 30
- Technical Solution (i.e. development, integration,…): 5G smart bins (weight+camera+controller) use on-device AI to classify waste. When confidence is low, images are sent to an edge server if network QoS allows (ENVELOPE Predictive QoS/Location)
- Legal Aspects (any Specific regulation): GDPR, EU AI Act
- Solution Implementation Hardware: Smart weighing scale retrofit kit, embedded controller/edge board, low-power camera for AI classification, 5G NR model and SIM/eSIM, power supply, edge compute for heavy inference
- Linked Products (components/parts): Weighing scale kit; embedded firmware + local AI; camera module; 5G NR modem/SIM; edge AI service (server/VM); cloud dashboard; ENVELOPE QoS/Location adapters; web app
